MFJ 259B Analyzer = Calibration

This is an MFJ procedure = that does=20 not contain any information that would not be = handed out=20 by them. It is easy-access to a test procedure, = that is=20 all it is. It is a shortcut to help=20 you. 

This information is here = only=20 because it is the correct way to calibrate the = MFJ-259B=20 analyzer. MFJ's first priority is making sure = people who=20 can not send units back to MFJ or who want to = verify=20 calibration with a correct reviewed and edited = procedure=20 have something easy to access. MFJ gets all the = credit=20 for this procedure, no one else.

It is best that no one = copy this,=20 and start handing it out in mass. The only = reason for=20 this is there should be a point of control of=20 information, so it can be corrected as errors = are=20 found.

Common Problems

This family of analyzers is = dc-coupled from the bridge to the antenna port. = The=20 bridge detectors are NOT frequency selective, = and=20 respond to anything from minor dc offsets = through=20 microwave signals. This causes a potential = problem if=20 there is any voltage appearing = across the=20 antenna port, from dc through microwave. (This = is also=20 true for competing analyzers from other=20 manufacturers.) There are multiple reasons = why, at=20 the time of design, these units were dc coupled = with=20 broadband detectors. Hopefully someday a higher=20 cost-design with selective detectors will become = available, but for right now this is all that is = available for amateur use. 

Because the detector is = broadband,=20 and because it is dc coupled to the antenna, any = external voltage across the input port causes=20 measurement errors. It is the accumulated = voltage of=20 multiple sources that is most important, not = the=20 strength of any individual signal. Because of = that,=20 large antennas should be tested at times when = propagated=20 signals in the range of the antenna's response = are at=20 minimum strength. 

A definite RFI improvement = occurs=20 with a bandpass filter, but multiple-section = bandpass=20 filters cause impedance measurement problems.=20 Multiple-section filters behave like = transmission lines=20 of random line impedances, loss, and lengths as=20 frequency is varied. The best solution is to use = a=20 single-stage bandpass filter and dc isolation on = large=20 arrays or with long feedlines. I often use a = good 1:1=20 isolation transformer for measurements, and = often find a=20 parallel L/C filter (like the MFJ-731 Filter)=20 useful.    

The detector diodes = clearly stand=20 out as the most easily damaged devices in the=20 analyzer. If you have a sudden problem, it = is most=20 likely a defective detector diode. 

In order for the detectors = to be=20 accurate within a fraction of a percent (one = bit),=20 detector diodes must have very low capacitance = and a=20 very low threshold voltage. This means the = diodes,=20 through necessity, must be low-power zero-bias = Schottky=20 microwave detector diodes. The same = characteristics that=20 make them accurate and linear cause the diodes = to be=20 especially sensitive to damage from small = voltage=20 spikes. ALWAYS discharge large antennas = before=20 connecting them to the analyzer! Never apply = external=20 voltages greater than 3 volts to the antenna=20 port!

How This Unit Works

This is a rough summary of = how this=20 unit works:

The MFJ-259B, and other = digitized MFJ=20 antenna analyzers, compare three major voltages = in a=20 50-ohm bridge circuit. They are:

Vz=3D Voltage across the load. This voltage = is=20 called  Z in the alignment display = menu

Vr=3D Voltage indicating bridge balance. = This voltage=20 is called R in the alignment display menu

Vs=3D Voltage across a 50-ohm resistor = between the RF=20 source and the load. This voltage is called S in = the=20 alignment display menu 

 All voltages are = converted=20 through an eight-bit A-D converter to a 256-bit=20 digitized output with a test-display range of = 0-255=20 bits. By knowing the ratio of these voltages, as = compared to the regulated RF source voltage, = many=20 different load parameters can be calculated. An = antenna=20 analyzer could calculate everything (except sign = of=20 reactance) from measuring only Vs and Vz, but at = certain=20 impedances any small error in either Vs and Vz = becomes=20 critical. This is especially true when voltage = is=20 digitized into a 256-bit format (~0.4% steps). = At=20 certain impedances, an almost immeasurable  = voltage=20 change will cause a sudden large jump in the = measured=20 impedance parameters.

To reduce display impedance = jumps,=20 SWR is weighed into the calculation of reactance = and=20 resistance at low SWR values. (An SWR bridge is = most=20 accurate when the load is closest to 50 ohms, = which is a=20 primary measurement area where  impedance=20 measurements through Vz and Vs become critical.) = By=20 factoring in a direct SWR measurement from an = internal=20 bridge, the analyzer can check and "correct" any = small=20 level errors in Vs or Vz. This reduces the = impedance=20 jump that would occur with a one-bit jump in = voltage.=20 This also why bits must be calibrated for = near-perfect=20 accuracy. a one-bit error can cause a resistive = load to=20 appear reactive (the total of Vs and Vz must = always be=20 255 bits or less for a load to be considered=20 resistive).

Calibrating the MFJ-259B = Antenna=20 Analyzer

This calibration procedure = is the=20 correct procedure for later MFJ-259B's. = Disregard any=20 other information. Since MFJ-259B software has = been=20 changed under the same model number, you may = find some=20 final performance test steps not valid. These = steps will=20 involve parameters that do not appear on the=20 display.

Be sure you have printed a = copy of=20 the board layout showing adjustment points, have = read=20 all this, and have suitable loads before=20 proceeding.  

Adjustments

This unit has tracking and = gain=20 adjustments for Vz, Vs, and Vr. Tracking is set = at low=20 voltages (low bits). Gain is set at high = voltages or=20 bits. Together they make the detector voltage = output=20 closely track the actual RF voltage. 

This unit also has meter = calibration=20 adjustments. The analog meters almost certainly = suffer=20 from some scale linearity problems, they will be = somewhat less accurate than the digital display. = These=20 adjustments only affect analog meter readings. = The meter=20 adjustments do not affect the display.

Quiescent current (bias) in = the RF=20 amplifier section is adjustable. This adjustment = directly affects output signal harmonic content. = Harmonics are worse with low supply voltages, = and with=20 low impedance loads. Be sure you check the = harmonics as outlined below, with a 1/4 wl = open-circuit=20 stub!!

Excessive harmonics can = cause severe=20 errors in measurement of frequency-selective = loads, even=20 when dummy-load SWR tests appear perfect. Loads = most=20 sensitive to harmonic-induced errors include, = but are=20 not limited to, antenna tuners, tank circuits, = very=20 short resonant antennas, and distance to fault = and stub=20 length measurements. If you notice something = "funny"=20 going on with a stub measurement, it may be a = fault of=20 incorrect bias. 

Warning: Never = calibrate around=20 a sudden "problem" that appears. If a detector = suddenly=20 shifts voltage, the problem is almost certainly = a=20 defective detector diode. If the meter is = recalibrated=20 with a defective (leaky) diode, the meter will = probably=20 NOT track correctly with frequency.

Alignment

Tools and Equipment:=20

[  ] #2 = and #1=20 Phillips-head screwdrivers

[  ] = Small set of=20 non-metallic alignment wands for coils, or small = jeweler's screwdrivers for controls 

[  ] = Power supply,=20 regulated to 12-volts + - 5%

[  ]=20 General-coverage receiver with level meter or = Spectrum=20 Analyzer (these are optional with additional = work and=20 use of a stub) 

[  ] ~10 = MHz 1/4wl=20 open-stub, for example 15=92=20 good-quality solid-dielectric RG-8, UHF = connector at on=20 end, open on other (not needed with analyzer or=20 receiver)

[  ] 2.2-ohm 1/4 or = 1/2 watt=20 film resistor (not needed with = stub)  

[  ] = Accurate load=20 set to include:

A.    =20 Short

B.    =20 12.5-W = load

C.   =20 50-W=20 load

D.   =20 75-W=20 load

E.    =20 100-W=20 load

F.    =20 200-W=20 load

Note 1: Loads must be constructed using = physically small 1% carbon-film resistors.  =

  • DO NOT use large resistors. Acceptable = results=20 will be obtained when load resistors are = mounted in=20 the very bottom of a UHF-male connector.  =

  • The ideal load resistors are surface-mount = precision-resistors, but other styles will = work. It is=20 acceptable to parallel multiple resistors to = obtain=20 low resistances, but don't series connect more = than=20 two resistors! 

  • Never use physically large resistors, such = as=20 1-watt or larger resistors, unless you are = absolutely=20 positive they are composition-types (very = rare). =20

  • Since the loads are used to set the number = of bits=20 in critical calculations, the maximum = reactance error=20 will always be worse than the percentage of = resistive=20 load error. A one bit error in calibration (~ = .4%) can=20 shift a resistive load to read reactance.=20

Quick-connect loads can be made with surface = mount  resistors on a BNC male chassis = mount=20 connector with the bayonet removed. This makes a = =93quick=20 connect=94 connector that will slide directly = into a=20 type-N female.  In this = case, use=20 a good UHF to BNC female adaptor for the 259 = units. With=20 a 269, the load will plug directly in to the N=20 female. 

Note 2: The power source = should be=20 the LOWEST expected operating voltage. DO NOT = use a=20 standard "wall-wart" or batteries! You can = reduce=20 voltage from a conventional 13.8v regulated = supply by=20 adding a few series diodes. Silicon diodes will = normally=20 drop about 0.6volts or so per diode. Three or = four=20 diodes will reduce place the voltage below 12=20 volts.

WARNING: The = MFJ-1315 AC=20 adapter or other "wall-warts" should NOT be used = to=20 power the unit for most alignment=20 steps. 

Step 1

Visual Inspection: Before, during, and = after=20 calibration, be mindful of physical = condition.=20 Watch for missing or loose hardware. Do not = tug,=20 stress, or repeatedly flex leads, or carelessly = flop or=20 toss things about. Keep your bench clean. Follow = these=20 rules the entire time you have the unit = apart!

Step 2

Battery Tray Removal: This step = provides=20 access to trim-pots and most inductor=20 adjustments.

[  ] = Remove last=20 two batteries at each end of the tray.

[  ] = Remove two=20 screws (right side) and extract the tray.

[  ] = Always=20 position the battery tray to minimize strain on=20 wires. 

Refer to = the board=20 layout pictorial for specific control = locations.

Step 3

Band=20 Overlapping: Each band should overlap the = next by a=20 small amount to ensure gap-free coverage from = 1.8 MHz to=20 170 MHz. While viewing the LCD Frequency = Display,=20 wiggle the bandswitch from side-to-side gently. = Watch=20 for any display or meter dropout. Check each = band as=20 follows:

[  ] = 114-170=20 MHz: Oscillator tunes from below 114.0 MHz = to above=20 170.0 MHz. Check tune for dead spots.

[  ] = 70-114=20 MHz: Oscillator tunes from below 70.0 MHz to = above=20 114.0 MHz

[  ] = 27-70=20 MHz: Oscillator tunes from below 27.0 MHz to = above=20 70.0 MHz.

[  ] = 10-27=20 MHz: Oscillator tunes from below 10.0 MHz to = above=20 27.0 MHz.

[  ] = 4-10=20 MHz: Oscillator tunes from below 4.0 MHz to = above=20 10.0 MHz.

[  ] = 1.8-4=20 MHz: Oscillator tunes from below 1.8 MHz to = above=20 4.0 MHz. Check tune for dead spots.

While verifying overlap, = check at=20 least the lowest and highest bands carefully for = dead=20 spots. The LCD Display will indicate = 000.000MHz=20 if a dead spot occurs. Dead spots generally = indicate a=20 defective tuning capacitor=20 (TUNE). 

If you find the switch = causes a=20 dropout the switch may have dry or dirty = contacts, or=20 poor solder joints. Check the solder joints = first. If=20 you must clean and lubricate the switch, be = aware it is=20 a difficult task. The entire board needs to be = lifted=20 from the case front. Dirty band-switch contacts = may be=20 restored with spray tuner cleaners. The best = place to=20 spray the switch is from the front side (shaft = side),=20 right below the nut. You must remove the switch = indexing=20 tab retainer nut and the metal switch retainer = (stop)=20 under the nut. Be sure the stop goes back = exactly as=20 removed.

To correct overlap = problems,=20 locate and retune the appropriate VFO coil (see=20 Pictorial for coil locations). Note that L1-L4 = are=20 slug-tuned and require an insulated hex-head = tuning=20 wand. If you use the wrong size wand or a worn = wand, it=20 will break a slug! 

Inductors L5 and L6 are = located on=20 the component side of the board and are=20 compression-tuned (press turns closer together = to lower=20 frequency or spread apart to raise frequency). = Make only=20 very small corrections--especially to L5 or=20 L6--and recheck the band you are adjusting. = You=20 should also check the next lower band = after each=20 adjustment to ensure that the lower band hasn't = moved=20 excessively.

Important Warning: VFO coils MUST be = aligned=20 from highest frequency to lowest frequency. The = next=20 higher range affects next lower band the = greatest=20 amount.  Do not attempt VFO = coil=20 adjustment unless you are experienced working = with=20 VHF-LC circuitry or complex alignment=20 procedures. 

Step 4

Harmonic Suppression/ Bias: Connect = the=20 analyzer exactly as shown = below. 

  •  The impedance of the cable to the=20 measurement device should match the impedance = of the=20 measurement device.=20
  •  The "T" must be connected either = directly to=20 or placed within a few inches of the analyzer. =
  •  The power source must be the lowest = expected=20 operating voltage.=20
  •  The measurement device must be=20 well-shielded, and not pick up any substantial = signal=20 from the analyzer when the "T" is disconnected = from=20 the analyzer.

Step 5 

Harmonic = Suppression=20 (bias=20 R89): This adjustment = reduces=20 oscillator harmonics. Harmonics will cause = incorrect=20 readings under some load conditions.  =

WARNING:  Incorrect = adjustment=20 of R89  will NOT show when checking with = resistive=20 dummy loads!!! The unit will appear to calibrate = correctly, but will produce errors in stub = length,=20 distance-to-fault, and other frequency selective = functions.

When = R89 is set=20 properly, harmonic suppression of =9630 to = =9635dBc should=20 be possible across most of the analyzer=92s = tuning range.=20 This particular adjustment must be made at the = lowest=20 expected operating voltage. Proper alignment = requires a=20 12.0-volt regulated supply as a power source. = NEVER use=20 an AC adapter or any supply voltage higher than = 12-volts=20 when making this adjustment. A = calibrated spectrum analyzer works best for = monitoring=20 harmonic output, but a well-shielded = general-coverage=20 receiver with signal-level meter will also=20 work. The receiver MUST be = "T'd" into=20 the analyzer just as the spectrum analyzer is, = and the=20 Tee and resistor must be located at the analyzer = connector. If you do not have a = good-quality=20 receiver or spectrum  analyzer, use the = test mode=20 of the analyzer with a stub. Watch MFJ analyzer=20 test-mode Vz. Test-mode Vz will roughly indicate = total=20 harmonic voltage when the analyzer is set at the = stub's=20 exact resonant frequency. Entering the test mode = is=20 described in Detector Calibration (Step = 6). =20    

[  ] = a.=20 Install either a 15=92 RG-8 open stub, or = resistor and=20 measurement device, and tune analyzer to = approximately=20 10 MHz

[  ] = b.=20 (stub and internal Vz use only) Observing = Vz on=20 the data display (analyzer test mode), adjust = frequency=20 until the lowest fundamental output = reading (or=20 lowest impedance) is obtained. You should = clearly see=20 the MFJ analyzer's fundamental frequency output = voltage=20 (Vz) go through a deep null. 

[  ] c. Observe = the=20 analyzer frequency reading. This is the = approximate=20 resonant frequency of the stub, and the test=20 frequency

[  ] = d.=20 Without changing the analyzer test = frequency=20 setting, observe the second harmonic level. This = harmonic will be at twice the MFJ analyzer = frequency=20 counter reading..

[  ] = e.=20 Adjust R89 for lowest 2nd harmonic = meter=20 reading on the receiver, lowest Vz test-menu = reading, or lowest harmonic level  on the = spectrum=20 analyzer. Be SURE the fundamental frequency = level=20 remains nulled in the analyzer. 

WARNING:  Always = repeat=20 steps (b) through (e) at least one extra time = when=20 relying on display Vz. The original null point = of any=20 stub will shift if there is a substantial = reduction in=20 harmonics after R89 is adjusted. The original = stub=20 frequency, as observed at (c), will probably = change=20 slightly. It is NOT necessary to recheck when = doing a=20 resistor load test with a good-quality spectrum = analyzer=20 or receiver. With a resistor, exact test = frequency is=20 NOT critical.

NOTE: If you have a = poorly=20 performing spectrum analyzer or receiver with = limited=20 dynamic range, use a stub with the spectrum = analyzer or=20 receiver instead of a 2.2 ohm resistor. If you = have a=20 reasonable quality spectrum analyzer or receiver = (at=20 least 50dB dynamic range) use a 2.2-ohm = non-inductive=20 resistor in lieu of the stub, resistor = adjustment is=20 easier and more accurate.

Detector = Calibration=20

Step 6: 

This critical sequence = calibrates A-D=20 conversion for various load conditions. If you = know your=20 unit has been tampered with, preset trim pots=20 R88, R89, and R90 to their = center=20 positions before continuing. If you find any = control=20 bottoms-out in adjustment, you almost certainly = have=20 installed an incorrect load or the analyzer has = a=20 defective detector diode.  

To prepare for detector = tracking=20 alignment, place the analyzer in Test Mode.=20 Entering test mode may be tricky with some = units,=20 and it may take practice. To enter Test = Mode:=20

[  ] = Turn=20 power off.

[  ] Hold = down=20 MODE and = GATE =20 buttons while restoring power.

[  ] As = display=20 comes up, slowly (about 1 second period) rock = between=20 pushing the MODE and GATE = switches=20 alternately (the best method is to use two = fingers, and=20 rock your hand from side to side between the two = buttons)

[  ] = Confirm=20 analyzer has entered test mode (it may take more = than=20 one try).

[  ] = Using the=20 MODE button, advance display to the = R-S-Z=20 screen (shown below).

Note: If you go past = the R-S-Z=20 screen, you can still see R-S-Z by pushing and = holding=20 the MODE button.

Important Note: Small = single-turn=20 trimpots are touchy to adjust and tracking = settings are=20 somewhat interactive. If specified readings = aren=92t=20 obtained on the run-through, repeat the sequence = a=20 second time (accuracy counts). When the sequence = is=20 complete, turn power off to remove the analyzer = from=20 Test Mode.

Be particularly mindful of the total bits of = Vz and=20 Vs. If the sum of these bits ever exceeds 255 = with a=20 resistive load, the analyzer will indicate=20 reactance.  

Display=20 Test and Analog Meter Calibration =

Step 7:

This step sequence checks = meter=20 calibration and verifies accuracy of the LCD=20 Display information.

Remove and re-apply power = and enter=20 the Real-Imaginary impedance mode = R-X.=20 Readings + or - 10% of reading or  + or - 5 = ohms of=20 display, whichever is larger, are considered = within=20 design specifications. Typically digital = readings are=20 almost perfect with proper detector calibration. = Analog=20 meter readings may be outside that range, and as = much as=20 20% off with some load values.

Capacitance = Mode=20 Check

Step = 8: =20  

If you have a few precision capacitors, you = can=20 verify the calibration between the ranges of 100 = and=20 5000 pF. Read the analyzer manual for details of = capacitor = measurement.

 Frequency Counter = Check=20

Step 9:

These steps verify accuracy = of the=20 counter. Note that the counter=92s clock isn=92t = user-accessible, so no adjustments will be made. = To=20 conduct this test, use a general-coverage = receiver in AM=20 mode.

 

[  ] Tune = in=20 WWV on 5.0,10.0,15.0, or 20.0 MHz = (frequency with=20 best reception).

[  ] = Install a=20 short clip lead or wire in the analyzer=92s = Antenna=20 jack.

[  ] Turn = on the=20 analyzer and zero-beat the WWV signal as = closely=20 as possible.

[  ] = Compare LCD=20 Display reading to the WWV frequency being = used.

[  ] = Verify=20 agreement is within =B15 = kHz.=20

Advanced = Modes Check=20

Step 10: 

This sequence verifies = operation of=20 the analyzer=92s advanced features. To enter = Advanced=20 Mode menu:

[  ] Turn = unit=20 off.

[  ] Hold = down the=20 MODE and GATE switches while turning power = on.

[  ] = Verify=20 =93Advanced=94 appears on the LCD = Display.

[  ] Tune = VFO to=20 >170 MHz (top end of coverage = range)
